What is cyanotype?

Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints.

The process uses two chemicals: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide that is sensitive to UV light, which is why they're also known as Sunprints. Anna Atkins, who is sometimes considered the first female photographer, used cyanotype chemicals in the 1840s in a more photographic way than they were originally intended.

Her book, Although privately published with handwritten text, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions is considered the first book illustrated with photographic images.

I have many greeting card designs using the cyanotype process and found bits of nature from the Canadian wilderness, where I live.
